IATLIS:

Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) (founded 1969) is a professional association of teachers and professionals in Library and Information Science in India. Since its inception in 1969, IATLIS has been active in taking up several issues of LIS Education in India especially relating to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, infrastructure, teachers’ training, etc. It actively works for the promotion of the professional interests of LIS teachers. As part of its activities, it conducts national seminars, workshops, training programmes, etc. It brings out its official organ 'IATLIS Communication' besides publishing pre-conference volumes. This year the annual IATLIS conference is to be held at Department of Library & Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The theme of the conference is “Changing Face of LIS Education: Learning Styles and Teaching Methodologies”. The conference is scheduled to be held during November 27-29, 2008.

Chandigarh:

Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, the City is known for its urban planning and modern architecture in India. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of "Chandi, the goddess of power and a fort of 'garh' lying beyond the temple gave the city its name "Chandigarh-The City Beautiful". As the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, the Union Territory of Chandigarh is a prestigious city. It is a rare epitome of modernization, co-existing with nature's preservation. It is here that the trees and plants are as much a part of the construction plans as the buildings and the roads.

Panjab University:

Panjab University, rated five star by NAAC, has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research. The glorious traditions of the University, since its inception in 1882 at Lahore (now in Pakistan), are a source of inspiration for the present generation of faculty members and students. It is a University of national character and stature, in so far as it has drawn both its faculty and students from all over the country and abroad. Its faculty includes some of the most distinguished scientists and academicians in various fields. The university campus, a residential one, is spread over an area of 550 acres The University has 58 teaching and research departments and 10 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located in sector 14 and 25, Chandigarh.

Department of Library & Information Science:

The history of the Department of Library & Information Science goes back to 1960 when a post-graduate Diploma in Library Science was instituted by the University at its Chandigarh Campus, (before this a training course in librarianship was provided at Lahore before the partition of India). After many changes in the nomenclature, the two separate programmes of BLibISc and MLibISc were merged to constitute a Two-Year Integrated Course leading to Masters of Library & Information Science from the academic session 2003-04. Ph.D. in Library and Information Science was introduced from the academic session 1972-73. The department has a computer laboratory where students learn software and the Internet skills. The department also has a well organized library blended with text books and reference material. To keep pace with the developments in ICT, the department has been revising the curriculum periodically.

Call for Papers:

Papers on the above facets of the basic theme “Changing Face of LIS Education: Learning Styles and Teaching Methodologies” for the XXV-IATLIS National Conference should reach Dr. B.D. Kumbar, General Secretary, IATLIS,C/o Department of Library Information Science, Karnatak University, Dharwad 580 003, on or before Oct 31st , 2008. The paper should not be more than 3000 words. Please send youir paper in print and electronic form on a 3½″ floppy in Word and a soft copy through email to bdkumbar@yahoo.com.

Registration:

Indian Delegates:

Library and Information Science Professionals : Rs.2500/- (for outstation participants)
: Rs.2000/- (for local participants)
Accompanying persons : Rs.1500/-

Foreign Delegates:

SARRC Countries: $ 100
Other Countries: $ 150

The registration fee covers conference kit, proceedings of the conference, accommodation, boarding and local transport. Accompanying person shall not be entitled for conference kit.

Delegates are requested to include registration fees for accompanying person while forwarding their registration forms since it would not be possible to entertain last minute requests in view of shortage of accommodation. Delegates are also requested to intimate their travel plan in advance to avoid inconvenience.

Accommodation:

Accommodation in hotels, guest houses, University guest houses will be arranged by the local organizing committee.

How to Reach Chandigarh:

Chandigarh is well connected by road, rail and air. National highway 21 and 22 are the chief road arteries linking Chandigarh with the rest of the country. Chandigarh Railway Station is about 8 kms from the City Center in Sector 17. Chandigarh airport is 11 kms from the City Centre and pre-paid taxis as well as autos are available at the bus stand, airport and t the railway station.

Reception:

The Organizing Committee will make arrangements to receive participants at Chandigarh Railway station provided the information is received well in advance by the organizing committee. Delegates are requested to arrange their return tickets and reservation well in advance.

Climate and Clothing:

Winters are quite cool and it can sometimes get quite chilly Chandigarh in Nov-Dec. Average temperatures in winter (November/December) are 6.7°C (minimum) to 27.3°C (maximum). Delegates are requested to bring proper woollen clothes.

A two day ICSSR sponsored seminar on

Trends and Strategic issues for libraries in global

Information society

Inaugural Session, 18^th March, 2008 (10.00 AM)

The seminar which was attended by 150 delegates, was formally inaugurated by the Honorable Shri Sanjay Kumar, Finance Secretary, Chandigarh Administration on March 18^th, 2008 at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Department of Library and Information Science, was the Seminar Director and Prof.Sewa Singh, Department of Library and Information Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was the Raporteur General.

The Inaugural session started with the presentation of bouquets to the dignitaries. Prof. Ranjana Vohra Chairperson, DLIS, P.U, welcomed the dignitaries on the dais, participants and invitees to the University as well as to the City Beautiful Chandigarh. Prof. Preeti Mahajan presented an overview of the Seminar Theme.

Sri Sanjay Kumar, Finance secretary, Chandigarh Administration stressed on the importance of libraries as a place for reading books which shape the personality of the users and take them to the next level of consciousness. He also released the seminar volume on this occasion.

While delivering the keynote address, Dr.R. K .Chadha, Joint secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat explained how libraries have changed during the recent times from acquisition to access, from library centered to patron centered activities. He emphasized the need to use ICT to empower the information poor by providing access to literary, education, gender equality, sustainable development, etc. He further said that the Internet and the Web are providing new opportunities to libraries and accordingly their role is expanding day by day.

Prof. Jagtar Singh, Department of Library and Inf. Sc., Patiala University, identified the new trends and the strategic issues for libraries. He said that efforts must be made to provide massive low-cost access to quality information to all information seekers.

Prof. S.S.Bari, Registrar, PU, Chandigarh, in his presidential address said that changes in the libraries are inevitable as a result of IT applications and India can not remain aloof from the global trends and developments. He stated the need to provide increasing range of services to different categories of users.

Prof. Preeti Mahajan proposed a vote of thanks. She thanked all the invitees, participants and their organizations. She also thanked the entire team of the department of library and information science, PU, for making the event successful.

This was followed by an instrumental video of the National Anthem।

The Department received an overwhelming response from the authors across the country. A total of 75 papers were received for publication. The editorial committee after thoroughly examining all the papers, accepted 57 papers in full and 13 papers have been accepted for publication in the form of abstracts.
